Description of Skil 2336-01 3.6-Volt Mini-Drill/DriveriXO is a palm-sized cordless screwdriver that has several advantages over its bigger brothers. It fits easily into your tool belt or pocket. It has enough torque to drive wood or sheet metal screws, and the 3.6-volt Lithium Ion battery has power equal to larger NiCad batteries at half the weight. The driver including the battery weighs in at only 10.3 oz. Another advantage of lithium ion batteries is that they hold a charge for an exceptionally long time. Place the iXO on a shelf or in a drawer and 18 months later the lithium ion battery will still be charged and ready to go.The iXO has a 1/4-inch hex head to accept any of the 34 included bits, or simply use the head to drive 1/4-inch sheet metal screws. Add your own 1/4-inch drive and socket set to use on hobby projects to remove bolts or nuts in small or hard-to-reach areas. The forward/reverse button is located on the soft-grip handle just above the trigger for ease of use. You can switch directions without switching hands and you're good to go in any direction. This is an ideal lightweight handy tool for any job that requires either limited usage or for constant use of a drill/driver. Just a few examples are; hanging curtains, picture frames, shelves, bathroom fixtures or mirrors, for hobbyists, home inspectors, electricians, computer or cable installers, moving companies, retail store owners, and appliance repairmen. I could go on and on about this exceptional tool. --C. Dwight Barnett
Tools and Hardware Reviews of Skil 2336-01 3.6-Volt Mini-Drill/DriverCustomer Review: Great light-duty screwdriver Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned this driver for about 18 months and have charged it twice (maybe one, not sure). Albeit, I do use it infrequently, but it held the first charge for well over 6 months. Even assuming I didn't use it at all for 6 month (I did), no other tool I own does that. Skil claims it will hold a charge for over a year with no use...have not tried that, but it would not surprise me.
In fact, the size, weight, charge-cycle time and reliability of this tool has led me to replace ALL my drills and drivers with Li_Ion tools. I am replacing 3 Ryobi 14.7 Ni-Cad drills (along with 5 batteries, 2 saws, lights, etc) with the new Makita LXT system. An expensive upgrade, but once you use the new Li-Ion battery powered tools like this one, you will NOT want to mess with the NiCad/NiMhd battery hassles again!!
To me, the biggest difference is the charge retention. Because NiCad and NiMhd batteries lose their charge over time (either in use or not in use) nad we never know when we will need them, we tend to keep the batteries in the chargers. This fries them over time. Contrast this to a tool not charging all the time and ... voila!
On the topic of torque (aka "tork"), this driver DOES come up short, but I do not see that as a product flaw, per se. This is an electric screwdriver, not a true drill/driver or impact driver. It is not intended to be used to build a deck...it is LIGHT duty. I have broken enough of these light duty "drivers" to know not to expect too much out of them. Heavier jobs should require a heavier (read "the proper") tool. This is not for woodworking or particle board furniture assembly...I would want to use a driver with a clutch for that job, but for household work it is excellent!
I keep mine in the garage at my workbench, but this tool would also be ideal stuck in a kitchen drawer or a utility closet.
The fact that it ALWAYS is ready to go without sitting in a charger is reason enough for the 5 stars.
Did I mention it holds a charge well?
